In these two final sessions we will leave the world of Vienna 1900 and look at two recent American films that each revisit fin-de-siècle Vienna in ways that are not necessarily readily apparent. We will use these two films to discuss the phenomenon of "Habsburg nostalgia" and the ways in which this period has been remembered. We will also talk about relationships between art and life, history and representations, and the impact that this period has had on the 20th and 21st centuries.
Watch Wes Anderson's 2014 film Grand Budapest Hotel, which is widely available for rental.
Straightforward, but not so simple, question: What do you think this film has to do with fin-de-siècle Vienna?
